The Greatest Draw Ever Achieved

In ever decreasing light, Whitchurch’s final wicket (Kilford & Kilford) valiantly held off the might of Bradfield’s bowling attack until the inevitable rain arrived and the match ended in a draw.  True, but oh how misleading;  Bradfield were better in all departments other than the scorebook!!. A second-wicket partnership of 170 took Bradfield to an impressive score of 206 for 4 at tea and thereafter Whitchurch limped to 52 for 9 when the rain arrived.  Whitchurch’s highlight was Matt Kilford’s contribution with both bat and ball - three overs at the death for very little and a wicket, and a straight bat until the rain arrived. After the match Matt Kilford said: “If the old man hadn’t given so many away when he bowled I could have gone for the win” Editor: Which ‘old man’, with so many to choose from, is he referring to? When ASBO’s Fail, Try Boot Camp

Boot Camp attendees Nick Turner and John Stalker underlined the successful introduction of this US-driven idea for dealing with middle-aged delinquency by both playing starring roles in Whitchurch’s first game of the season. Lower Earley couldn’t lay a bat on anything Nick bowled in his spell of 8 overs, playing a major part in restricting their eventual total to 195. Thereafter John was the only person with the bat who looked comfortable against the Lower Earley attack, making sure with his 58 that Whitchurch reached the respectable score of 165 and (most importantly) keeping the game alive until the pub opened. Care in the Community doesn’t seem to be working with Lyn who continues to run out anybody who is unfortunate enough to have to bat with him. Lyn
